This project was inspired by some other silhouette boxes I've seen. I wanted to create a custom one for my wife whose favorite animal is an elephant.
First I created a powerpoint by combining images into 4 seperate layers. This was the quickest way to create the unique layers.
Next, I scaled and stacked the layers to see how it would look together. I changed the design until I was happy with the final design.
I spaced each of the layers by gluing strips of 1/8" thick foam board around the perimeters, then added a translucent layer at the back to diffuse the light.
Next, I soldered cut sections of pre-programed LED lights together that provide the back light.
I cut the images out with a Cricut, using textured paper making it look good in daylight, with the backlights off. This is the assembled image with the lights off. The IR sensor and power adapter were glued to the top of the frame.
Any RGB color can be chosen, this one is the sun setting. If I redid this project, I would change the
lights to be placed around the perimter of the frame facing inward. That would prevent the focal points from the LEDs that were not fully diffused.
However, going with this option would require a deeper frame.
This one is a full moon on the horizon.
The lights can be programed to fade, flash, or whatever wanted.
