I was inspired to create some beskar ingots after watching The Mandalorian. I had an idea to make them with custom Star Wars symbols.
Solidworks software was used to design the beskar ingot with mutliple Star Wars designs. There is a hollow section
in the middle to add a metal insert. The metal insert was bought from Lowes and cut into proper lengths.
After printing the base, a metal insert was hot-glued in the void to prevent it from rattling around. Initially, I printed separate top and bottom pieces and then used a solding iron to fuse the two.
The printer then resumed to enclose the metal insert. I had a lot of issues with the adhesion to the metal insert.
I needed to heat the insert before resuming the print. I did this with a heat gun. This helped with the adhesion to the metal insert, otherwise the print would fail.
The added weight from the metal insert brought the total weight of the part to 250g (roughly 1/2lb). This made it feel more realistic, compared to the 42g from just the plastic print.
The symbol can be changed as desired.
I sanded down the prints so the ridges would not show in the final product. I then painted a layer of black acrylic paint immediately followed by a light
silver spray paint layer. With a line of toothpicks taped together I scraped off the silver paint layer to expose the black underneath, giving it that damascus style.
I waited for those layers to dry then gave a very light dusting of black spray paint so it was not so shiny.
This should be enough beskar to make at least one shoulder pauldron!
